You know, I love this kind of blog post. On the product and shop pages, I always have to keep things so brief. Our blog is a place for long posts and detailed answers! So if you want to know for sure whether Whacktown is the game for you, you’ve come to the right place.
Otherwise, you can find the product page here with a slightly shorter description. Click here to go to the shop page, where you can buy the game.
What exactly is Whacktown?
If that’s exactly the question you’re asking, you’ve come to the right place. Whacktown is one of those games you can’t explain in a single sentence. It’s more like the beginning of a short story: a story about power, speed, tactics, and a city that glows in neon colors, while the next gunshots can already be heard in the background.
Whacktown is an accessible yet skill-based game for 2 to 4 players aged 14 and up, with a playing time of about 30 to 45 minutes. I like to describe Whacktown as a fast-paced, tactical game in which you build a criminal empire, recruit a gang, and deliberately get in your opponents’ way. Whacktown is not a nice game.
Whacktown doesn’t want to be well-behaved, polite, or predictable. It’s really loud and craves conflict and fists! It wants you to feel like you’re struggling to survive in the middle of a wild 90s gangster world.
What makes Whacktown special, of course, isn’t just the mechanics, but the atmosphere. Palm trees, roller skates, shootouts, and sunsets! The game combines gangster humor with nostalgic GTA vibes, all while telling plenty of offbeat stories. That’s exactly why Whacktown doesn’t just look like a board game—it looks like a world you’ll want to dive into right away.

Well, are you curious?
When you see Whacktown for the first time, you might have a lot of questions: How does Whacktown play? Is it more chaotic or tactical? And why does it look so much like a wild 90s gangster world?
Now for the answers: Whacktown is chaotic AND tactical. You have to plan, react, and sometimes just accept that things are spiraling out of control at the table. That’s because Whacktown is an “everyone-against-everyone” game where every effect can affect all opponents. The beauty of it is that no one has to target anyone else specifically. In Whacktown, violence is always spread around generously.
Whacktown doesn’t feel like dry, tedious optimization—it feels like action. You have to optimize your moves to avoid getting blown up right away, no question! But it never gets bogged down in overthinking. Whacktown thrives on direct confrontation. You have to recognize the right moment to strike. In Whacktown, even a momentary lapse in attention will quickly cost you dearly.
How Whacktown Works
If you’re so determined to find out the rules of Whacktown that you’ve read this far, you probably want to know if the game is complicated. It isn’t. Whacktown is designed so you can jump right in. At its core, each round consists of three steps: Move, Hustle, and Chill. You move your gang, play Hustle cards, and then draw new cards.
The city itself isn’t always the same. The base game includes 76 different locations, 20 of which are randomly selected to form a 4×5 city map for each game. This ensures that no two games are alike. Today you might be jogging along a sunny beach lined with palm trees; tomorrow you might find yourself on a street you wish you hadn’t turned down.
That’s exactly what makes the gameplay so appealing: it’s fast-paced, but not superficial. Locations aren’t just tiles on the board—they’re gateways to tactical opportunities. Some locations are only accessible if you meet the right conditions or pay the required cost. Whacktown’s gameplay is a wild and rather hard-to-describe mix of access control and card management. You plan which locations to visit and when, block them, and simultaneously decide which cards in your hand to sacrifice for powerful actions.

A Short Tour of Whacktown
Whacktown is a city where there’s something to discover around every corner. You should know your neighborhood well, take over the right spots, and, above all, gather enough information and build up your reputation to work your way to the top. So the game rewards not only aggression, but above all good timing.
Our illustrator Hendrik likes to describe Whacktown as a parody of the late ’80s and early ’90s: pink roller skates, the beach, muscle-bound guys, Walkmans, neon lights, and that slightly over-the-top big-city vibe that lies somewhere between Miami, an action movie, and GTA. The world of Whacktown is a lovingly exaggerated take on that era, with a touch of tongue-in-cheek humor. You can learn even more about the world of Whacktown in our podcast.
Whacktown isn’t just a board game—it’s all about the atmosphere!
Who is Whacktown intended for?
Whacktown is aimed at players looking for a quick, action-packed nightcap who enjoy making tactical decisions without getting bogged down for hours on end. I especially recommend this game to people who enjoy gangster humor and nostalgic GTA vibes.
Is this the right game for your group? Yes, if you enjoy direct interaction, like to tease each other, enjoy competing for influence, and aren’t afraid of a bit of chaos at the table. If you prefer to play peacefully, Whacktown probably isn’t the game for you.
Whacktown is more than just its mechanics
A good board game sticks in your mind not just because of its mechanics, but because of little details. In Whacktown, for example, these are the quirky locations, the gangster characters, and that blend of grit and humor. But mechanically speaking, it also needs a kind of dramatic framework. A fancy way of saying that to win a game, you either have to knock everyone else out of the game or be the first person to reach 10 reputation. That gives the game a clear goal and thus a clear narrative arc—you know what I mean.
The game is deliberately designed so that you don’t have to spend a long time learning how to play before you can finally get started. You can jump right in. Someone in the room should have read the rules at some point—but other than that, you can just start playing and see what happens.
A few words about the atmosphere during the game
Whacktown also thrives on the fact that it feels a bit like a movie you’re experiencing together. One moment you’re still in a cheap motel, with your gangster life under control. The next moment, everything escalates because someone suddenly puts their malicious plan into action. Could you have seen that coming? Probably. It’s exactly these moments that make Whacktown interesting, because they create stories you keep talking about after the game.
Whacktown isn’t just designed to be functional; it’s crafted with a deep love for the world, the sound, and the visual style. You can really tell that from the game.

Bottom line: Is Whacktown worth it?
If you’re looking for a game that’s quick to set up, competitive, and features a vibrant world, then Whacktown is worth checking out. It’s a game for connoisseurs with a distinct edge, fast-paced action, and a setting that tells stories. The mix of tactical depth, gangster humor, and a ’90s vibe makes it a game people will still be talking about long after the game is over.
How much chaos, style, and strategy can one city hold?
